Several hours after the last terrible explosions wracked the earth, Garth slowly scrambled up the mile-long passage of the pitch-black abandoned mine. When he reached the surface, the sky was stained a deep red scarlet and punctuated by myriad mushroom clouds. Fear exploded in his brain as he thought to himself, “Oh, God! They’ve finally done it!”

After getting over the initial shock, Garth headed back to what had once been civilization; but try as he might, he could not find anyone else alive. He began to wonder why the radiation had not killed him. Perhaps he was immune…

“I wish I was immune to these kinds of stories,” he said aloud. His wife giggled. “Deep red scarlet—as opposed to that deep green scarlet. I’m sure… as he thought to himself—unlike those other times he thought somebody else, right?” Rolling his eyes, Trent flipped through the pages to the last one. Just as he had expected, Garth wasn’t really the Last. Man. On. Earth. after all—it was just… a dream.

He picked up another rejection slip and checked off the appropriate line. This time he had a considerable number of comments that applied, but he chose and checked off the one which read: 4 Stories which depend on surprise endings are rarely surprising and even more rarely are they good stories. Placing the manuscript and slip into its return envelope, Trent mused, as he had done many times before, on the amazing frequency of similar stories in the slush pile. It seemed that many nights of reading were almost exactly alike.

(Almost game time, well almost… still time for a couple more.)

The next submission was crinkled and bent and marked from numerous paper clippings and mailings (and was that really the ghost of a coffee ring?!… Jesus.)

He read the title:
